I liked the build, but compared to other models, I needed a hammer to join some of the parts. In addition, the mechanism does not work well for me due to excessive friction. The manual should probably emphasize sanding more.

I loved assembling this model, and have generally been very happy with the product. However, I found that the rubber bands that control the "spring" mechanisms wore out and broke pretty early on. The box still functions, but it takes a little extra effort without the tension of the rubber bands. I wish that there were a way to replace the rubber parts with real metal springs which would not degrade so quickly.

My only complaint would be, the rear light somehow doesn't want to stay in the groove

I was able to put most of it together without an external tool however the tiny decoration along the top I did need something to help push them together. I absolutely love it and can't wait to bring it to work.

Building this clock was a huge challenge for me. At first, I could only get it to run for about three hours. But after disassembling it several times, applying wax, and sanding some parts—especially the hour-hand mechanism—I finally got it to work! As the photo shows, it ran for an incredible 6 hours and 25 minutes with the engine turned off! After tweaking a lot with the pendulum, I was also able to achieve a difference of only 4 seconds compared with a stopwatch over that entire period!! This is a fantastic piece of engineering, and there were times I truly felt like a clockmaker. It gave me many hours of fun during and specially after its assembly. Thank you again, Ugears! You're geniuses!

I had it as a gift and it is a really cool kit, easy to follow the steps and it looks cool on the shelf but I guess I did something wrong because the mechanisms of the base won't turn, they are kind of stuck and I am afraid If I try to dismantle anything I will be lost with the pieces numbers or I will break something. I will try another one of the kits, though, I really enjoy the mounting and the looks.

This model is a good mid level challenge and well designed. I found some of the parts did not fit snugly and needed to be glued so they didn't fall off...ie front bumper, back license plate. Several moving parts such as hood, trunk, doors, seats and turning front axles. I always prefer the spring motor to the rubber band models.

UGears Harry Potter Hogwarts Express Model Kit

I am enjoying building the Hogwarts Express very much especially as I am painting it all like the example in the UTube video. I am doing it backwards really as I did the track first and then the carriage and the tender and then the engine. I enjoyed doing the first three bits but the engine is giving me a few problems. Parts 1 to 5 were quite difficult to make and it would be. Helpful if there were spares. the gears on page 10 were difficult to complete as the pieces are fragile and require a lot of strength and dexterity to complete. It is very easy to break pieces 24, 25, 28, 29, and 32, spares would be very useful and when I assembled them all some of the holes in pieces 9 and 34 seemed small and I had to do quite a bit of filing to get them to fit. I broke a couple of the washers no 27 and had to fix them with super glue. So a couple of spares would have been very handy. In spite of that the model is great and I will send some photos when i’ have finished it. 2 more small points. I found it hard to paint the signs on 162 and 164. If the lettering were more pronounced it would be easier to paint, and I also found the hammer you provided in your Ugears Expess Train essential for this model. These models are great fun and I am hoping to do your QUIDDITCH PINBALL next. I have not produced nice music on my Hurdygurdy yet but like to try.

This model was by far the most difficult to with . (I have built 20+) Not because it was difficult to assemble, but it was SO difficult to separate the parts from the boards. I think I spent more time cutting and pressing the parts from the boards without damage, than assembling the model itself. Even then it happened time and time again that the upper ply of the part splintered off. The material (plywood) seems to be very dry and flaky. The assembled model works fine and is Fun to play with.

This is the very first time I've tackled this type of project, and honestly, I was so afraid of failing that it took me two years to even start! In the end, the instructions are quite clear. I had a little trouble at the end, and that's probably why the scoreboard unfortunately doesn't work. I advise you to follow the instructions to the letter, especially when it recommends waxing or filing the piece! The finished product is superb; I'm thrilled. The pinball machine works quite well. If you're used to doing 3D puzzles and are also a Harry Potter fan, don't hesitate!

This is a fun puzzle. Not too difficult if you follow the instructions. More importantly, make sure you sand and wax all round parts and the holes they go into; along with all gears. Sometimes sand between teeth to make sure there are no wooden remnants. It moves down the hallway fast. I can't get it to walk slowly. You will need to run the gears while holding the hexapod to mesh the gears to run smoothly several times.

An excellent model to build. I have learnt to use graphite as the anti friction medium on the gears and the wax on flat surfaces. The legs work really well when switched on but it doesn't walk too far, requiring prodding from time to time. When picked up the legs flail around for quite a while. I suspect there is too much friction between the rubber bands on the feet and the surface it is travelling over. Put it on a marble worktop and it travelled much further.

This is a superb model. Very skilfully designed. The suspension is great, as is the door that opens and snaps shut. Also the clockwork motor with winder hidden under more doors. Before construction I coloured most parts, not with paint, which would be too thick, but with special felt tip pens whose ink was absorbed by the plywood and most items clicked together OK. Some sanding was required too. All in all, the painting took over 9hrs and construction over 13hrs. I'm 78 and starting on a marble run tomorrow!

This thing is amazing. I thought the fish would just rotate around, but they actually swim. couple bits of advice though, at first the mechanism didn't work, obviously make sure everything is put together right, but it needs to be worn in a little. at first I forced to move wondering why it didn't move on its own, but eventually it started to but would just go short bursts. Just tapping it would make it go again and doing this multiple times it eventually would just go completely on its own. second, make sure to keep all the little bits and pieces in a small bowl or dish. I almost sent an email begging for a piece I had lost until it finally turned up.

Fantastic Model, love the mechanism very much. Insane Detail and wirks perfectly. Be aware, my model did not work at first, too, as I filled the gears with wax which blocked them when I had to check the mechanism during construction and initially I could not move the gears by hand. USE A HAIRDRYER ON MEDIUM TEMPERATURE TO MELT THE WAX CAREFULLY. Therefore, just wind the spring, activate „swim“ and direct the warm air to the gears. It took just 2 minutes until the mechanism ran super smoothly.

This is my first wooden mechanical model, and I preferred to start with something easy. Apart from a small decorative flower that broke during assembly (my carelessness), but was immediately replaced with an identical piece included in the kit, everything else is perfect. I highly recommend thoroughly deburring the gears once they're removed from their housings and not skimping on the wax; it makes the mechanism much smoother and easier to operate. In any case, for a first attempt, it was a resounding success and a source of great satisfaction. Thank you very much.

I love ugears models and I have a large verity of them. This is by far the most beautiful and elegant model of all! But quite sadly it does not hold without glue, and it even if you glue it, it still shakes. With that said I still definitely recommend it, just due to its elegance, but keep in mind that contrary to all other models this one does not stand on its own.

Great product. Well illustrated, single-sentence polyglot instruction manual. Not recommended for older, arthritic hands. I broke several pieces in setting up the pieces. Earth globe assembly is particularly fragile. Once finished, after many hours of focused attention in several sessions and some frustration, it's quite a rewarding experience to gaze on and teach others a model (it's just a model) for the mechanics of the phases of the moon and the seasons of the year based on ratios of wheel gears correctly engaged. A misplaced single piece can derail the whole motion, an important lesson in group work. Every manager and team leader should have one on their desk to show that a team is as strong as its weakest link.

UGears Mechanical Tellurion Model Kit

The design of this model is brilliant on so many levels. The Earth rotates on its axis keeping its orientation in space as it orbits the Sun; the moon orbits the earth, and the plane of its orbit is tilted with respect to the Sun and Earth! Without the tilt, eclipses would happen twice per month. The adjustment for the phases of the Moon with the seasons is masterful. In the assembly of the structure, there is the clever way the slots are ‘sprung’ so that the tabs are retained snugly. Then there are the artistic touches—the animated flapping bird on the Earth, and other ornamental features. I had to have three goes at assembling the mechanism using the eccentric/off-centred gear before it would run smoothly, but apart from that, the build was straightforward, although I used a great deal more sandpaper than was supplied... A superb and highly educational working model of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. My first from Ugears, but by no means my last. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Very nice! You have to follow the directions closely. You still may need to adjust the gears once it is set up. Be sure to wax the “shafts” to make this easy. Shafts = toothpicks. Not hard (a bit harder than easy). Take your time, use care and it comes out nice! I wonder if painting it would enhance it.

I bought this to build with my 9 year old. It is the first one we've attempted and it is definitely more complex than we expected, so the 14+ rating on it is accurate. The mechanical parts are fascinating. I was able to teach my son about gears, ratchets, and one way freewheels. Amazing. The only thing I wish was the instructions had 1:1 images of the rubber bands so we could be sure we had the right ones. Kind of like Lego does with axles.

I love this little machine.Typical UGears quality, which comes in handy when painting. The build was a good one. The fit was excellent, the tolerances were tight, and the gears meshed nicely. It only toom a handfull of runs to break it in enough to get all the moving parts doing their thing. The paints I use are craft store acrylic metallics, Vallejo metals and airs. Everything is hand painted on the sheet, with edges done before assembly. Paint does weaken the pieces, so I sand a bit oof the edges of each little peg so they don't require as much force. Even a light layer of paint can create a snug fit after that.

As usual an amazing little device from UGEARS. This was a challenging build. I didn’t think my motor was working at first, so I put a headlamp on and inspected the build while reviewing the manual. I jiggered with the gearing a little bit with the tips of my fingers until I started getting movement, then more movement. In a little while all the parts were mating really well and it was working flawlessly. These products take care to assemble correctly and a little breaking in to work properly. Enjoy the process! These are unique items!

Awesome build! For those struggling, a few tips: -sand all burrs even if they already feel smooth; it makes fitting much tighter -wax tight connections; it makes assembly much easier (and disassembly if needed to fix mistakes) -soak all bendable parts (I leave them wrapped in a wet paper towel for a few minutes); it allows gentle stretching without breaking -take your time and have fun! Things break, glue repairs. -mark the steps as they are completed; it makes it so much easier to pickup tomorrow where you left off today.

This is a really nice kit, but I have some nitpicks. I had to glue on some stops for the doors for them to consistently close perfectly (Just a couple of bits of toothpick at the front and back wall). The tensioning mechanism for the string only goes one way. I was very afraid of breaking something, or having the tension break something in the future. But with all that said, it's a great build and the model looks awesome when completed. The pictures don't do it justice, and I love it.

This is a fine model to build. All the pieces came out of each board with minimum effort. The shuttle was challenging with the gears to open and close the shuttle doors. Just follow the instructions. The most trouble I had was the fishing line. It had a life of its own. Hard time creating and utilizing the loop to the bottom of shuttle. Looks great on the shelf and looks like it's flying with the almost invisible fishing line.

Definitely anadvanced build (not for the faint of heart)! This is my first Ugears project after doing six of a competitor brand. I find that the instructions weren't as detailed BUT the parts are much more sturdy. Actually thepanels are at least twice as thick. I have it completed but I have a couple of gears jamming and Ihaven't found out whichones they are so it won't operate (annoying) but I will figure it out. One other thing I discovered is that the "lock" is just a hair too long making catch on the drive gear! Try it if you dare and want a challenge! John

I assembled this model about three years ago, and I found it quite interesting from a technical point of view. I was pleased with the assembly process, but the design itself is very capricious and may not work the first time. I also could not set the exact speed of the clock, so I cannot use it for its intended purpose. However, the model is beautiful and it is pleasant to watch it work. I can recommend it.

An excellent puzzle! A challenge to build and impressive to show off. Adequate instructions, easy to follow. Not for beginners though! And extreme care must be taken - this is very intricate puzzle, and demands full attention at all times. (I made one minor mistake: I installed the UGEARS logo backwards on the top part.) They point out that you need to seat the top tourbillon part. However, once it is completed, there is a breaking-in period: The first time it only ran a few seconds, but I kept restarting it and now it runs continuously.

Good job UGEARS!! This vehicle's assembly was a brilliant and surprising, specially the back chain. It's the most complex model I've ever built, with the highest number of pieces. After finishing, I had to remove the front wheels to polish the wood and apply wax so they'd roll smoothly. Attaching the spring was one of the most challenging tasks I've faced in my 10 wooden puzzles. I finally got the tricar to travel an incredible 5.30 meters!!!. Can anyone beat that? ;)

Lovely vehicle, it looks so pretty on my shelf and building it was a blast. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about its mechanism. Even if I wind it up all the way, it remains stuck and it needs a little extra push to release the spring. The front wheels also turned out to be too tight, they don’t roll on the floor at all, making it impossible for the car to move on its own. Not sure if I did something wrong, the rear wheel does not have this problem at all. But I bought this car primarily for decorative reasons (and to build it of course) and for that, it is perfect.

This was so satisfying! We made the box as part of our date night over the past few weeks. Near the end we made a mistake and thought the whole project was doomed but we managed to retrace the build back to the mistake and correct it without breaking anything. Finally, we put the key in the lock and everything started moving so smoothly! Someone said they used wax to help them push pins in, we sanded down a bit the sides when pushing felt too resistant. And we used a lot more wax than what was in the box - we actually used the cheap little white candles you find in big shops in large packs. They're softer.

I just finished this model. It was a real challenge to put this one together. The rubber band assemblies were the most challenging. Trying to get the thicker bands through the holes and all the same length was very difficult. I had to use all of the available spare parts because I kept breaking the parts. But i finally got it. Other than that this model is fantastic. It runs great!!! Make sure you use plenty of wax on the moving parts. I love these Ugears models. The problem is which one should I do next. You guys are great. I love these models. Please keep up the good work.

I really enjoyed putting this together. This was my first try at Ugears and I did break a couple parts that I was able to replace with a spare part except for one I was able to glue. If I didn’t show you you wouldn’t know. My only problem I can’t make it run. I guess a gear is not lined up and I am not going to take it apart to see. I will build another model and be more careful. I do think it is important to take your time building these. I was very impressed with how precise the parts fit together.

My my first ugear model and not my last one! Quality is fantastic and instructions are quite clear. I only made a couple of mistakes but I could resolve them. There are some spare parts but I didn’t need to use any of them. It cost me 10h of work approx. It is recommended to use wax properly if you want your car to move, else there are too many friction. I had to put wax at the very end on the gears as if it was oil in a car. Quite funny. Only one comment, I don’t understand the purpose of the wheel with rubber on the left side, plus it is the only part that doesn’t hold well and I had to put some glue there.

Great model, Took most of a full day of just focusing on this model to build it which I love, Plenty of spare pieces for the ones that are likely to snap, although I didn't need any of them. I love the introduction of colour onto these models, the plain Lazer cut ply looked great with the contrasting light and dark shades, but the little bit of colour goes a long way. Plenty of features to play with although I mainly build these models for display purposes. The use of a metal clock spring as the 'engine' means it won't go dry and brittle over time like t older rubber band powered sets unfortunately have. Overall brilliant model for those used to the u gears system and up for a bit of a finicky challenge. Would recommend

I purchased the UGears Butterflly for my daughter who loves putting puzzles together. This offered another element to the puzzle - being able to make the puzzle move. We spent a few hours working on it together and finally it was finished. It was a challenge for my daughter, but not too hard. The puzzle itself was good quality and the finished product was very satisfying to see. Highly recommend as a family project for younger children, or an individual project for older children.

A great gift for patient people with time on their hands. I originally bought this model kit to be part of a birthday present for my husband earlier this year but, having opened the box of goodies from Coolthings, I could see that it was going to be a bit of an overwhelming present, because (as it says in the description), you have to put it together yourself. This is fine of course, but you also have to pop out the pieces from the flat sheets of wood, which is ok and makes sense from a packing and shipping point of view, but it just means you need to budget for that time as well. So, due to the start of the year being still crazy busy, it's been changed to be part of a father's day gift instead. It looks like it will be a lot of fun once it's assembled. On the practical side it was packed very well, and it arrived quickly.

Anyway, building this model was HUGHE fun. Do NOT expect the set to run free of issues, this is WOOD. I had a piece of wax from a chinese model which helped a lot. Don't know wether a real candle would have worked as well. The most fun for me as a kind of an engineer was the actual gear, I rebuild it five times so it was correctly assembled and fit, also in the frame. To bad it's done. A special gimmik is the gear moving the top doors of the tender. Using tooth picks is a great idea, opended my mind for simple solutions. If one breaks (or even more) you find some in your kitchen in a drawer. IF you inserted some wrongly, yu can use a dremel or proxon with a 2mm drill to oben the connection. I also like that there are some replacment parts. Tips; use wax when installing tooth picks on the picks. Heat the wax with a ligher, especially with the gear wheels. it'll cover the wood and then add some more. If a tooth pick does not fit, try another one, there is quite some tolerance to the diameter of such material. eventually you'll find one that prvides a good fit and is not too tight. Do NOT use force! A small pair of pliers helps. To UGears: Check your assembly manual, some numbers (one or two) are not correct. Have it checked for usability/comprehensiveness. At some (rare occasions) I had difficulties to follow the instructions. Add a piece of wax. great work, good prescision, great fun. Too bad it 's done.. I think I will got for the marble towers next

The model is quite high-quality, all units work smoothly and without any hitches. The only thing is that in the free-running mode the key moves jerkily, apparently the tension of the rubber affects it, pressing it to the front wall. There were two typos in the instructions, which did not affect the quality of the assembly. I find the decision to use toothpicks quite interesting and practical, but I still wished there were fewer of them. I was pleased with the model, as well as the assembly, which took me about 6 hours.

It was a birthday present for my boyfriend and he loved it! Eventhough it is an advanced level, each step is explainded carefully, which makes it so easy to follow. Every detail is perfectly taken care off and it does move smoothly. The only downside is that you have to be very carefull no to break any pieces while taking them out of the boards. Fun kit to build but have a LOT of patience! I'm fairly experienced with these kits. I've built 3 of them from 3 different manufacturers. All 3 were on the 4 to 5 difficulty range. Have upwards of 35 hours building this one.,more than any of the others. Wood quality is very good, instructions are quit clear,no script, just pictures. Only complaints I have are 1 . The camshaft gears are a little to thin . I broke 1 of 4 removing them from sheet 2. This is the only part I have broken in the 3 kits I've built! I glued it but it broke when operating the engine so I contacted them to get me a new part, hopefully they will send me one. Problem no. 2 I strongly recommend gluing the camshaft lobes in place on the shaft as I did as it is virtually impossible to assemble while holding these 8!! lobes in place. Just be certain that they are glued in exactly the correct position!!!!! Also most parts are very small! So have strong nimble fingers, good up close eyesight and again, Big patience! Also the small accessory pulleys are too lose and floppy so the drive belt goes out of place at times. Overall it was a fun and challenging kit to build! ENJOY! Also when basic assembly is done be advised it will take an hour or so to get it all to rotate smoothly, again,have patience and don't put the elect motor on until you are sure it operates smoothly in both directions . That's all I have to say about thaaaat.
