This unique cloud-shaped storm glass is a traditional way to forecast the weather with a modern twist!

The crystals inside the cloud-shaped glass respond to air pressure and atmospheric fluctuations to accurately predict the latest weather conditions.

It makes for an attractive and practical desktop display, allowing the observer to forecast the possibility of clear skies, wind, snow, storms or rain. What a great conversation starter!

A neutral and appealing gift for those who are hard to buy for.

  • Small dots in the liquid: Humid or foggy weather.
  • Large flaky crystals: Cloudy skies, snow in winter.

  • Crystals at the bottom: Frost may be coming.

Cloud Weather Station Instructions

Place the Cloud Storm Glass Barometer when the liquid is clear, in an area of your home that is not subject to sudden temperature changes. It should not be subjected to sunlight or an outside wall, close to any heating or cooling vents or in a window that gets direct sunlight. It may be necessary to test different locations in your home to find the area of optimal operation of the Cloud Storm Glass Barometer.

Gradually as the temperature of the barometer stabilizes to room temperature, the liquid will start to appear white and crystals will start to appear. This is the normal activation cycle of the Storm Glass Barometer. Leave the Storm Glass Barometer undisturbed, and over the next week it should begin doing its job of helping you to predict the weather.

It may be necessary to reset the barometer by gently shaking to redistribute the crystals into liquid before achieving optimal performance. The barometer will need to be reset two to three times a year to keep its predictability.

The optimal temperature range for crystal formation is from 41°F (5°C) - 86°F (30°C). Below and above these temperature ranges the crystals will dissolve and the liquid will appear clear. Once the glass has returned to the optimal temperature range, the crystals will reform. To avoid these temperature swings, please do not place in a hot sunny window or in a cold or drafty location.

There are no crystals visible. I fear that the outside heat may have damaged it as summer temperatures are in the mid 40 degrees C. Do you have any suggestions or should I bin it.

CoolThings Australia Response
Hi Dallas, Thanks for your message. It’s quite possible that the high temperatures have caused the crystals to dissolve — the optimal range for crystal formation is between 5°C and 30°C, so anything above that (especially in the mid-40s) can definitely affect it. The good news is that the storm glass likely isn’t damaged. Once it returns to a cooler, stable environment, the crystals should gradually reform. I'd suggest moving it to a spot inside that’s away from direct sunlight, heating/cooling vents, or outside walls — somewhere with minimal temperature fluctuations. Give it a few days to settle, and you should start to see crystals forming again. Let me know how it goes! Best regards, Peter

I have one of those 'hard to buy for' brothers, and when I stumbled across this I thought it was perfect for a Christmas gift for him. He loved it and has been sending me photos every time it changes appearance. P.S. It has been eerily accurate so far!

Not sure if it's working

CoolThings Australia Response
Hi Ayesha, Sometimes due to the shipping process, the weather glass can get “stuck” – Which results in crystals just sitting at the bottom and storm glass not working correctly. If you notice a lack of change within your storm glass, it is essential that you reset it. To reset your storm glass, carefully place it in a plastic container filled with mildly hot tap water and leave it there for about 20-40 minutes. You can gently shake the glass every 5-10 minutes to move crystals around and speed up the process. Repeat the process until all crystals dissolve and the liquid inside the weather glass becomes completely clear. Once you reset your storm glass, dry it with a towel and let it cool down for 5-10 minutes. Place it near a window or outer air; within a few hours, the liquid inside your storm glass will begin to crystalize. Now you can enjoy this beautiful instrument! Your storm glass should be more reactive to weather changes, provided that you have placed it in the right place. Some tips with setting up are for it to be undisturbed, in free air, not exposed to heat, sun o drastic temperature changes, but in the ordinary light of a well-ventilated room.
