In nature there are minerals that offer hidden properties. Some of them float, others split images, and some are even magnetic!

Now it's up to you to discover the properties of minerals. Learn about Calcite, Magnetite, Ulexite, Pumice and Obsidian!

Calcite has the power to refract light rays and split images, a phenomenon known as "double refraction". This mineral's clear crystals were once used to make prisms for microscopes, but they are so rare they have been replaced by cheaper minerals.

Place the calcite on the stripy card and see the image's double refraction!

Like this experiment, there are four others to choose from. While they are simple and well-instructed, your child (or student) will learn some very interesting and handy facts about minerals!
