Works great, my kids love them. Sometimes holding the string on the wrong angle does cause it to tangle, and then I need to remove the knot. Most of the time it is vey easy to do. Sometimes it's a little tricky. But overall a great fun toy for the kids (and the adults sometimes as well).

Frequently Asked Questions About ZipString
ZipString moves a lightweight loop of string through a handheld device fast enough to make it fly through the air. The effect comes from a balance of speed, gravity, lift and air resistance. Move your hand to create shapes, loops and tricks while the string keeps travelling around the loop.
ZipString Original is the handheld version for floating string tricks. ZipString Luma adds a built-in light for glow-in-the-dark strings. ZipString Aracna straps to your wrist and launches and retracts the string, with glow effects too. Choose Original for classic play, Luma for glowing tricks or Aracna for a wearable webshooter experience.
ZipString’s current product pages recommend ages 4 and up with adult help, or ages 8 and up for independent play. Younger players may need help loading the string and clearing tangles. Follow the age guidance and instructions on the packaging for the model you choose.
Start with gentle side-to-side movements before trying up-and-down tricks, which are more likely to cause tangles. Give yourself time to practise loading and starting the string. The included QR code links to ZipString’s trick library, so you can watch demonstrations and build your skills step by step.
The Original includes the device, three string loops, a USB-C charging cable, instructions and access to the trick library. Luma and Aracna each include five strings: three UV-reactive strings and two glow-in-the-dark strings, along with the device, charging cable and instructions. Check the product listing for the contents of multi-packs and bundles.
Yes. Original, Luma and Aracna have rechargeable batteries and come with a USB-C charging cable. You do not need disposable batteries. Follow the charging instructions supplied with your model. For the Original, charging can take up to two hours; its indicator changes from red while charging to blue when fully charged.
Battery life depends on the model. ZipString lists around 3-4 hours under normal use for the Original, while its Aracna guidance gives around one hour before recharging. These are estimates rather than guaranteed playtimes. Refer to the instructions supplied with your model for its charging and battery guidance.
Luma and Aracna have built-in lights that recharge the glow effect as the string passes through the device. Use the supplied glow-in-the-dark strings and follow your model’s instructions to activate the light. Glow effects are easiest to see in low light. The Original does not have the built-in glow light.
Follow the loading instructions for your model. The handheld ZipString uses a loading gap between its wheels to guide the loop into place. Remove twists and tangles before starting. If you need a demonstration, watch ZipString’s loading videos or check the Instructions tab on the product page.
The string can tangle when the top and bottom halves of the moving loop touch. Side-to-side moves are easier to control than up-and-down moves. Release the button, remove the string using your model’s loading instructions, untangle it and reload. ZipString’s setup videos demonstrate this for the handheld version.
A tangle or extra resistance can trigger the device’s load protection and stop the motors. Release the button, clear the tangle and press it again to restart. Yes. Our Chameleon String Pack adds colour-changing effects in motion, while the Luma Lightning String Pack adds lightning and strobe-style glow effects for Luma. These packs contain strings only, so you need a ZipString device. Check the pack’s product description for compatibility before ordering.
For the easiest replacement, choose strings made for ZipString. The string’s weight, thickness, slightly fuzzy surface and smooth join help it fly and move through the device. ZipString explains that making a suitable loop at home is possible, but joining it correctly is tricky. Ordinary string is not a direct substitute.
Keep the string off the floor where possible. Dust, debris and pet hair can collect near the wheels, so periodically brush away any build-up. Release the button before removing tangles or handling the loading area, and follow the care instructions supplied with your model.
Yes. ZipString can be used indoors or outdoors, provided you have enough clear space for the moving loop and your tricks. Luma and Aracna also offer glow-in-the-dark play. Choose a space where the string can move freely, and follow the instructions for your model.
